15-Year Marliniversary: Marlins Sweep Expos in San Juan to Set Club Record for Scoreless Innings

The 2004 season for the Florida Marlins didn't have the memories that the year prior brought, but on this day 15 years, the Fish did something that had not been done in nine years.

On April 15, 2004, the Marlins completed a 3-game sweep of the Montreal Expos with 3-0 victory. Each of the three wins in the series for Florida came by way of shutout. That had not been done in Major League Baseball since the 1995 season when the Baltimore Orioles swept the Detroit Tigers without allowing a run.

Florida starting pitcher Carl Pavano went seven innings while allowing just three hits to earn the victory for the Marlins. After Chad Fox struck out the side in the eighth inning, Armando Benitez got Orlando Cabrera to ground into a double play to earn the save and end the contest.

All the Marlins' offense in the victory came in the fourth inning. After Mike Lowell drove in Luis Castillo with a sacrifice fly, Hee-Seop Choi blasted a 2-run homer off of Zach Day. With the shutout, the Marlins set a new franchise-record by throwing 30 straight shutout innings.

The series started with a 5-0 shutout in a contest where Brad Penny yielded just two hits in eight shutouts innings. Miguel Cabrera homered in that victory, finishing with three hits and three RBIs.

Florida won the middle game of the series, 9-0. Dontrelle Willis allowed four hits in five shutout innings in the victory. Choi and Cabrera each homered in that contest while Willis helped himself considerably at the plate. Willis was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

The previous record for the Marlins was 27 scoreless innings set during Florida's 1997 championship season. The streak would ultimately end at 31 innings two days later against the Atlanta Braves.

The 31 consecutive scoreless innings remains a club record for the Marlins. That record was set on this day 15 years ago.
