25-Year Marliniversary: Fish Get First Series Victory

(Photo: Getty Images) Throughout their history, the Florida/Miami Marlins have won plenty of series, including two World Series. As an expansion franchise early on however, things were tough. But on this day 25 years ago, the Marlins clinched their first series victory ever. After dropping the opening contest of a 3-game series against their expansion sister, the Colorado Rockies, 5-4, the Florida Marlins took the second game at Mile High Stadium, 2-1. As the teams met on April 25, 1993 in a Sunday afternoon contest, it was the Marlins who dominated. After plating two runs in the third, Florida put the game out of reach early with an 8-run fourth inning. The frame was highlighted by Junior Felix's grand slam in what would be an eventual 11-1 win for the Marlins. At the plate, Jeff Conine and Alex Arias each went 3-for-5. 25 Years After Marlins Inauguration: MLB and NFL Shared Stadiums a Thing of the Past

(Photo: Sun Sentinel) Now at their fancy home at Marlins Park, the Miami Marlins are celebrating their 26th season in Major League Baseball. 25 years ago in 1993, the franchise then known at the Florida Marlins began play at Joe Robbie Stadium. In the first season of Marlins baseball, the stadium was shared by the newest team in the Major Leagues and the established NFL franchise, the Miami Dolphins. That, at the time, was the norm. For the two South Florida franchises, it was the case until 2012 when the Marlins were renamed and relocated to the state-of-the-art Marlins Park in downtown Miami. Today, only the Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics share a stadium. With the Raiders set to move to Las Vegas, it won't be long before that's no longer the case either.  In 1993 however, 12 different Major League Baseball and NFL franchises shared a stadium.
